Santorini

Welcome to Santorini

Santorini is one of those places that most likely will live up to the hype – think whitewashed houses tumbling down cliffs, endless blue sea views, and sunsets that stop you in your tracks. It’s relaxed, a little bit indulgent, and perfect for doing as much (or as little) as you fancy.

Quick Facts at a Glance

  • Language: Greek (English widely spoken)
  • Currency: Euro (€)
  • Time Zone: GMT +2 (GMT +3 in summer)
  • Plugs/Voltage: Type C & F, 230V (same as most of Europe – UK travellers will need an adaptor)
  • Flight Time from UK: Around 4 hours
  • Entry Requirements: Valid UK passport (no visa needed for short stays)
  • Emergency Number: 112

When to Go

  • May–June & September–October: The sweet spot – warm, sunny, and less crowded.
  • July–August: Peak summer. Expect heat, buzzing energy, and higher prices.
  • April & November: Quieter, great for a slower pace, though some places may be closed.

Santorini isn’t big on festivals like mainland Greece, but the summer months are full of local celebrations, live music, and the famous volcanic fireworks in August.

Getting There & Getting Around

  • Flights: Direct from several UK airports to Santorini (Thira) Airport.
  • Transfers: Around 20–30 minutes to most resorts. Pre-booking is easiest.
  • Getting Around:
    • Hire a car or ATV if you want freedom to explore
    • Buses are cheap and reliable between main towns
    • Taxis are limited – plan ahead in peak season

Top Experiences & Must-Sees

  • Oia Sunset: It’s popular for a reason. Get there early and soak it in.
  • Fira to Oia Walk: A stunning cliff-top hike with views the whole way. Go early or late to avoid the heat.
  • Boat Trip to the Volcano & Hot Springs: A brilliant day out with a bit of adventure thrown in.
  • Red Beach & Perissa Beach: Santorini’s beaches are unique – think volcanic sand and dramatic scenery.
  • Wine Tasting: The island’s volcanic soil makes for amazing wines, especially Assyrtiko.
  • Explore Pyrgos Village: A quieter, more traditional spot with incredible views and fewer crowds.

Food & Drink

You’re in for a treat here. Santorini does simple food really, really well.

  • Must-try dishes:
    • Fresh seafood
    • Souvlaki (Greek kebabs – Maria’s Favourite!)
    • Fava (a local split pea dip)
    • Tomato fritters (a Santorini speciality)
  • Dining tips:
    • Book sunset restaurants in advance
    • Take your time – meals here are meant to be relaxed

And yes, a glass of local wine with a sea view is basically mandatory.

Culture & Etiquette

  • Greeks are warm, friendly, and welcoming
  • A simple “hello” or “thank you” in Greek goes a long way Yassas! That’s hello in Greek!
  • Dress is casual, but cover up slightly when visiting churches
  • Life moves at a slower pace – embrace it

Money Matters

  • Cash vs Card: Cards widely accepted, but carry some cash for smaller spots
  • Average Costs:
    • Meals can vary – budget-friendly tavernas to high-end dining
    • Drinks and sunset spots tend to be pricier
  • Tipping: Around 5–10% is standard

Safety & Health

  • Santorini is very safe overall
  • Watch your step on uneven paths and steep stairs
  • Stay hydrated – the sun can be intense
  • Pharmacies are easy to find if needed

Packing Tips

  • Light, breathable clothes
  • Comfortable shoes (those cobbled streets are no joke!)
  • Swimwear & a cover-up
  • Suncream, sunglasses, and a hat
  • Travel adaptor

Maybe pack something a bit dressy – Santorini evenings can feel a little special.

Optional Add-Ons & Excursions

  • Private sunset catamaran cruise – a bit of a splurge, but unforgettable
  • Wine tours across the island
  • Photoshoot in Oia or Imerovigli (perfect if you’re celebrating something special)
  • Day trip to nearby islands

If you’re celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary, or just fancy treating yourself, there are plenty of ways to make it extra memorable.

Stay Connected

  • Free Wi-Fi in most hotels, cafés, and restaurants
  • Local SIMs are available, but most travellers just use roaming
  • Handy apps: Google Maps and local taxi apps
